You Are A Badass | Rules

Posted on

Books and written words have a way of influencing us. We are in a constant search for deeper meaning, understanding, and connections in life that sometimes are only clear when curled up on the couch nose deep in a book. It is often not until later when you realize the impact that story had on your life and want to share it with anyone who will listen. For us, this particular book had an instant impact and one we wanted to showcase in the best way we know how, visually.

Style is such a personal expression of one’s self and often hindered by the fear and doubt of being accepted. This same message rings true for so many aspects of life and keeps us from truly finding our highest, most powerful selves. For this shoot, we removed the ‘rules’ of fashion and let the words of You Are A Badass by Jen Sincero, influence the way we styled some of our favorite pieces.

“You are a victim of the rules you live by.”

Sometimes our favorite outfits come from stepping outside of our comfort zones. Pairing unlikely patterns or colors that create just the right balance / shape to really polish the overall look. We love pairing vintage scarves with bold colors to help bring more weight to the top half of the body when pairing with a flow-y bottom. For all you small heads out there (both of us are in this category), adding statement earrings and a hat can do wonders for the balance of your outfit. Our go-to earrings are by Often Wander – they are the perfect shape and color for any outfit and a conversation starter any time we go out.

We love to use square scarves, and to fold them in half, to give the “bandana” look. The ‘V’ shape the scarf makes is super flattering and pairs well with low tops & dresses. We recommend paying attention to the weight of the scarf and the piece you are pairing it with. For this look, we used a light silky scarf to compliment the flow of the jumpsuit. Scarves are a great accessory to balance out an outfit that has more material or detail at the bottom as it helps bring attention up toward the face.
